Dick J. Bierman (University of Amsterdam, Utrecht University) has been active
in the field of parapsychology for over two decades, though he is skeptical
about the reality of psi phenomena. At least in the way we understand objective
reality, the world of public and shared data.
In his recent article, he suggests that in order to accommodate psi phenomena
we might have to propose new types of realities, intermediate between the
subjective but hardly deniable reality of consciousness and objective physical
reality. Thus psi phenomena could have some restricted reality within a group of
observers.
After a PhD in experimental physics he became involved in research in Artificial
Intelligence more specifically ‘Intelligent’ tutoring systems. This resulted in
a focus n individual learning and later learning during altered states of
consciousness most notable learning during sleep. Also the importance of
affective rather than cognitive processes in individual teaching lead him to
interest in non-conscious emotions and their role in (intuitive) decision
making. In that context his work on pre-sentiment, the apparent anomalous
activation of bodily arousal preceding emotional events, found a natural
context.
More recently he started to try to get an empirical handle on the relation
between quantum physics and consciousness. He is currently engaged in
experiments that might clarify this relation. The ORCH-OR model by Hameroff-Penrose
is indirectly tested by measuring decoherence times of the rhodopsin molecule in
the living retina. The Walker-Stapp dualistic model for the collapse of the wave
function is tested using a method earlier explored by Abner Shimoni. In contrast
to Shimoni’s approach the dependent measure is not a conscious ‘guess’about the
state of the observed quantum event but it is the early (non conscious) part of
the evoked brain potential.
Further work in psi related areas are his development of true random number
generators (now available through a company called ORION) and his active
participation in the Global Consciousness project where many of these RNG’s are
used.

Theo de Graaf was born in Holland in 1941 during German occupation.
After graduating from school in 1958, he enrolled as a medical student
at Leyden University. After having completed his final examinations in
medicine in 1966, he worked for a short time as a substitute general
practitioner and subsequently started his specialization in psychiatry
under the supervision of Prof. Jan Bastiaans, who at the time headed
the Jelgersma Clinic.
In 1967 De Graaf emigrated to Israel, where he pursued his
specialization in the psychiatric ward of Rambam Hospital at Haifa. In
Jerusalem he worked in the child-psychiatric department of Hadassah
University Hospital, the closed ward of Talbieh Hospital, and in the
Kibbutz Mother- and Child Guidance Center of Oranim.
From 1971-1978 De Graaf served as a military psychiatrist in the
Israeli Defence Forces. During and after the Yom Kippur War (1973) he
participated in the assessment and treatment of soldiers who suffered
from a Combat Stress Reaction. In 1976 he conducted research into the
influence of childhood experiences and of the psychological conditions
of combat on the vulnerability to post-traumatic ailment. In 1978 De
Graaf was registered as an Israeli medical specialist.
In 1979 De Graaf returned to the Netherlands with his family. After
having worked as a resident in the psychiatric and neurological
departments of the Amsterdam Medical Center, in 1980 he obtained his
Dutch registration as a medical specialist.
From 1981 until the present De Graaf has been working as a
psychiatrist-psychotherapist in Alphen aan den Rijn. In 1992 he
founded a private center, the Orpheus Institute for medical and
creative psychotherapy.
In 1998 he obtained his doctorate at Tilburg University with a
dissertation on 1-st and 2-nd generational traumatic roots of
psychiatric and psychosomatic ailment.
De Graaf was a co-founder of the Dutch Psychotrauma Study Group. In
1997 he set up, together with some colleague-psychiatrists and
jurists, a 'medico-legal committee for victims of war' for the
protection of the legal rights of Dutch war victims. He is an active
member of the Israeli-Palestinian peace movement.
De Graaf has conducted research on the psychiatric and psychosomatic
sequels of individual and transgenerational traumatization. He is
author and co-author of several articles in national and international
journals. He has also conducted research concerning the possible
traumatic roots of so-called paranormal phenomena such as portentous
dreams and psychokinesis. In his therapeutic work he strives to
combine family-dynamic principles with psychoanalytic
object-relational insights.

There are about forty people in Britain who have a PhD in Parapsychology - the exploration of psychic phenomena such as telepathy, clairvoyance and psychokinesis - and the majority of them are working within the University system.
Serena Roney-Dougal, however, has decided instead to put her unusual qualification to good use, by opening out the study of this previously esoteric field and introducing it to a wider public.
Setting up her own research organisation, the Psi Research Centre, in Glastonbury, Somerset - thought of by many as the very heart of the British esoteric tradition - Serena has spent the last twenty years giving lectures, teaching courses and presenting weekend workshops on parapsychology, mental development and yoga.
Serena has been working in and studying parapsychology for over 25 years, and her interests in the subject are wide ranging. Her highly successful series of classes in her home town took students through a list of apparently diverse topics - from ghosts and poltergeists to laboratory research; from divination techniques to out-of-body experiences; and much more - showing that they are all linked to a common core of knowledge that spans thousands of years. Now she is teaching parapsychology to M.Sc. students at the world's first yoga university, Bihar Yoga Bharati, in India, combining the western scientific methods of parapsychology with the eastern mystical knowledge of yoga.
An important element in Serena's work is her study of the role of the pineal gland in sensitivity to psychic phenomena and the associated chakra system. Her latest research involves working with a healer on an organic farm, and exploring psychic awareness in an ashram.
Serena has written extensively on various aspects of the paranormal, both for academic journals and conferences, and for popular magazines and books. She has also written a book "Where Science and Magic Meet", reprinted 5th times by the original publisher and now republished by Vega Books. She has just written the Faery Faith, Green Magic Books, 2003.

POSITION STATEMENT
When, in 1985, Friederike Schriever accepted Prof. Hans Bender's invitation to choose the Freiburg IGPP as the place for her two-year practical research in psychology, her leading interest was in the possibilities of applying known, accepted scientific methods in order to study, and maybe explain, parapsychological phenomena. This basic interest has remained unchanged since then. Consequently, in those parts of her own empirical research work that pertains to parapsychology, she analyzed the conditions for, and structures of, spontaneous phenomena (precognitive dreams, RSPK case reports). The psychological conditions under which spontaneous experiences occur have always been in the focus of her interest. In the extensive research for her PhD dissertation, she has investigated the reasons and justifications persons mention for their paranormal convictions.
