Thakur, Shivesh C(1979). Hidden variables, bootstraps and Brahman. Journal of the Society for Psychical Research, 50(781), (pp. 135 -148) Abstract Takes issue with the proposal by E. H. Walker (1974, 1975) that quantum theory can be used to provide a theoretical foundation for paranormal phenomena. The present author argues on philosophical grounds that Walker's account begs the question of how to explain the interaction between matter and consciousness. Despite this criticism, Walker's theory is seen as ingenious and as the potential basis for experimental work in parapsychology. The similarities between Eastern mysticism and modern quantum theory and relativity, particularly the hadron "bootstrap" model, are explained. According to F. Capra (1974, 1976), both take an "organic" view of the world in which distinctions between mind and matter are moot. The present author reiterates his own theory (1977) proposing that the Indian doctrine of atman-Brahman union can be used to explain parapsychological phenomena. It is held that Walker's physics-based theory can be accommodated with an atman-Brahman paradigm.
