Gauld, Alan(1978). Psychical research in Cambridge from the seventeenth century to the present. Journal of the Society for Psychical Research, 49(778), (pp. 925 -937) Abstract Gives an account of (a) the interest in psychic phenomena that arose in a group of Cambridge University men in the 17th century, (b) a revival of serious interest in psychic phenomena that occurred 200 yrs later, and (c) the state of parapsychology at Cambridge at the present time. It is argued that certain similarities of outlook characterize individuals of all these periods: a sense of the strangeness and complexity that lie below the surface of things, together with the conviction that challenges to understanding can be met by rational and empirical enquiry.
