Rao, K Ramakrishna(1978). Psychology of transcendence: A study in early Buddhistic psychology. Journal of Indian Psychology, 1(1), (pp. 1-21) Abstract Buddhistic psychology is essentially an attempt to understand the nature of transcendence and the methods of attaining it. "Consciousness," which is used interchangeably with "mind," is defined as "that which thinks of its object." Normal consciousness and the psychological processes associated with it are organized so as to generate a sense of stable and enduring ego, which influences passions, thoughts, and actions. Transcendence is a state of awareness in which the psychological processes lose their ego -reference and thus attain a transpersonal state. (11 ref)
