Stanford, Rex G(1978). Toward reinterpreting psi events. Journal of the American Society for Psychical Research, 72(3), (pp. 197-214) Abstract Suggests that according to available data, the basic function of ESP is disposition-subserving rather than specifically cognitive or perceptual, and that psi processes are goal-oriented rather than intrinsically based upon mechanical processing of information. A general model is proposed that subsumes both ESP and psychokinetic (PK) events. This model assumes that when a random event generator (REG) is operating and its outcomes have differential consequences relative to the disposition of a system (e.g., the needs of an organism), the outcomes produced will be biased or weighted to favor those most advantageous to that disposition. This is termed "conformance behavior." When the REG outcomes have no relevance to dispositions, no biasing occurs. It is as though nature anticipates the consequences of a "random choice" and weights the probabilities accordingly. The model subsumes both ESP and PK at whatever level of seeming complexity. In the case of ESP, the brain is conceived to serve as an REG. It is suggested that much conformance behavior may occur outside the context of traditional psi events. (24 ref)
