Hartman, Steve E (1999).
Another view of the Paranormal Belief Scale. Journal of
Parapsychology, 63(2), (pp. 131-141) Abstract Using a published correlation matrix (T.
Lawrence and P. DeCicco, 1997), the author re-evaluates the number of
dimensions of paranormal belief supported by the revised Paranormal Belief
Scale (PBS; J. Tobacyk, 1988). Two empirically validated procedures (the
minimum average partial and parallel analysis criteria) are used to estimate
the number of latent variables represented in this data set. Both indicate
that, for these data, the 7-factor solution favored by Tobacyk and G. Milford
(1983) and the 5-factor solution favored by Lawrence et al (1997) and
Lawrence and DeCicco (1997) may represent overextractions. Instead, 4 latent
variables may be all these data can support. It is suggested that numerous
modifications should be made to the PBS before additional effort is expended
on the factor structure of its items or on the relative merits of orthogonal
and oblique rotation of its factors.
