Blackmore, Susan J & Rose, Nicholas (1997). Reality and imagination: A psi-conducive confusion? Journal of Parapsychology, 61(4), (pp. 321-335)

Abstract

Designed an experimental procedure to induce false memories for pictures of objects. 33 university students were shown slides of some objects and were asked to imagine others. Ss also completed the Belief in the Paranormal Scale (BPS). Over a 3-wk period, Ss were questioned about the objects and were asked whether they had seen them or only imagined them. Through the use of a novel method of testing for psi, half of the imagined objects, randomly chosen for each S, were used as targets in a clairvoyance task. There was no correlation between the number of false memories and the BPS score. There were significantly more false memories of target objects than of nontarget objects. Thus, confusing reality and imagination may be psi-conducive.
