Richards, Douglas G (1996). Psi and
the spectrum of consciousness. Journal of the American Society for
Psychical Research, 90(4), (pp. 251-267) Abstract Reviews research examining the
distribution of psychic ability along the continuum of evolution/development
of consciousness and addresses whether the empirical results of
parapsychology (including methodological issues relevant to understanding the
place of parapsychological phenomena, experiments, and narrative and
longitudinal approaches to experiences and meaning) can be reconciled with
transpersonal theory. Subjective and objective data, collected by
parapsychologists along the ontogenetic and phylogenetic continuums, tend to
undermine the prepersonal/transpersonal distinction in models of
consciousness and suggest that psychologists will need to consider empirical
data from the full spectrum of consciousness rather than focus on
manifestations at a particular level when building theories incorporating
psychic phenomena.
