Kennedy, J E, Kanthamani, H & Palmer, John (1994). Psychic and
spiritual experiences, health, well-being, and meaning in life. Journal of
Parapsychology, 58(4), (pp. 353-383) Abstract Investigated the effects that psi and
other unusual experiences have on people\'s lives, particularly on their
health and well-being. 105 respondents (aged 17-47 yrs) to a questionnaire
provided data about anomalous experiences and health-related measures,
including well-being/mental health, self-rated health, healthy lifestyle,
meaning in life, transcendent and psychic experiences, temporal lobe
symptoms, and absorption. 59% reported a psychic and/or transcendent
experience. Those reporting anomalous experiences tended to have a greater
overall sense of meaning in life. Expressing artistic creativity and
observing spiritual beliefs were positively related to reports of anomalous
experiences, whereas obtaining wealth was negatively related. Scales for
absorption and temporal lobe symptoms correlated positively with each other
and with reports of anomalous experiences.
