Lawrence, Tony, Edwards, Claire,
Barraclough, Nicholas & Church, Sarah (1995). Modelling childhood causes of
paranormal belief and experience: Childhood trauma and childhood fantasy.
Personality and Individual Differences, 19(2), (pp. 209-215) Abstract Tested the childhood factors model of
paranormal belief development outlined by H. J. Irwin. 82 university students
completed a 61-item, 3-scale questionnaire relating to childhood trauma,
childhood fantasy, and paranormal belief (PNB) and experience (PNE). The 1st
test of Irwin\'s model showed that the model did not provide an adequate
fit to the data. In particular, covariance structure modeling using EQS
suggested dropping a direct causal link from fantasy to belief and adding a
direct link from trauma and paranormal experience. Both modifications were
implemented in a post hoc modified model that gave an excellent fit to the
data. A small but significant correlation was found between childhood trauma
and paranormal belief. PNB is best modelled as a consequence rather than
cause of PNE.
