Utts, Jessica
(1995). An assessment of the evidence for psychic functioning. Journal of
Parapsychology, 59(4), (pp. 289-320) Abstract Examines research on psychic functioning
(PSF) conducted over 2 decades, to determine whether the phenomenon has been
scientifically established. Focus was on government-sponsored research
conducted at Stanford Research Institute (SRI) and at Science Applications
International Corporation (SAIC). Using standards applied to other areas of
science, it is concluded that PSF has been well established. The statistical
results of the studies examined are beyond what is expected by chance.
Effects of a magnitude similar to those found in research at SRI and SAIC
have been replicated at laboratories around the world. The magnitude of PSF
exhibited is reliable enough to be replicated in properly conducted
experiments, with sufficient trials to achieve the long-run statistical
results needed for replicability. The author recommends that future
experiments focus on understanding how PSF works and on how to make it
useful.
