Rao, K R (1963). Studies in the preferential effect: I. Target preference with types of targets unknown. Journal of Parapsychology, 27(1), (pp. 23-32)

Abstract

Ss were tested for ESP performance on standard ESP targets and on targets of their own choice and design without knowing to which class of objects they were responding on each trial. In contrast to a previous experiment in which Ss were tested with this knowledge, the total results of the present experiment were above mean chance expectation on the ESP symbols and below on the symbols of each S\'s choice, with a difference significant at the .0015 level.
