Abstract

Previously we reported two experiments that used a true RNG-based PK task embedded in a competitive game played on a microcomputer. Each experiment had a competitive and a noncompetitive condition. A subset of participants in both experiments produced a significant negative correlation between the participant's anxiety (as measured by a state anxiety inventory given immediately prior to playing) and the scores obtained in the PK game test. Participants reporting higher levels of anxiety obtained lower scores.

Here we report a third experiment of the same type. We predicted that participants who returned the Participant information questionnaire would demonstrate the same negative relationship between state anxiety and game scores in the competitive condition. This prediction was confirmed (p = .048, one-tailed). An unanticipated finding was that this relationship was also observed (p = .013, two-tailed) in the noncompetitive game data. An overview of the entire experimental series reveals a consistent relationship between participant anxiety and PK game scores in the competitive condition.
