Mr
Hubbard serves as Director of NASA’s Ames Research Center in the heart
of California’s Silicon Valley. Prior to his appointment, Mr. Hubbard
was the Deputy Director for Research at Ames. In March of 2000, Mr.
Hubbard was called to NASA Headquarters, where he served as the first
Mars Program Director and successfully restructured the entire Mars
Program in the wake of mission failures. Some of Mr. Hubbard’s
previous key roles include the Ames Associate Director for
Astrobiology and Space Programs; first Director of NASA’s Astrobiology
Institute, and Manager of the Lunar Prospector Mission. He is also
credited with creating the Mars Pathfinder Mission. Prior to coming to
Ames in 1987, Mr. Hubbard was Vice President and General Manager of
Canberra Semiconductor and a Staff Scientist at Lawrence Berkeley
National Laboratory.
Mr. Hubbard received a BA in Physics and Astronomy from Vanderbilt
University and conducted graduated studies in Semiconductor Physics at
U. C. Berkeley. He has been awarded five NASA Medals: three times the
Outstanding Leadership Medal and twice the Exceptional Achievement
Medal, and has twice been awarded Laurels by Aviation Week. Mr.
Hubbard was elected to the International Academy of Astronautics, is a
Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and
is the author of more than 40 papers on space missions and related
