Matthew Smith was awarded a BSc (Hons) Applied Psychology from Liverpool Polytechnic and a PhD in Psychology from the University of Hertfordshire (under the supervision of Professor Richard Wiseman). His current research is examining experimenter effects in parapsychology.

He is currently employed as a Lecturer in Psychology at Liverpool Hope University College, England, where he forms part of the Liverpool Hope Parapsychology Research Group. His research has been funded by the Bial Foundation, the Perrott-Warrick Fund, the Society for Psychical Research, and the Parapsychology Foundation. He is the Deputy Editor of the Journal of the Society for Psychical Research, and he has acted as a consultant and contributor to various radio and television programmes in the UK and the USA.
