Carpenter, J. (1994). Guest editorial: Thoughts of the new world. Journal of the American Society for Psychical
Research, 88, (pp. 1-6).
Abstract
Against the background of his own developmental struggle with the broader meaning of parapsychology, the author urges others to hold on to the "ill-defined dream which impels our work as parapsychologists" and which is about an "incipient, unfolding new world." It wins us no new friends to de-emphasize the revolutionary implications of our work, partly because it is emotionally dishonest. Heeding the words of J. B. Rhine, who likened the work of parapsychology to the voyage of
Columbus, the author speculates how the implications of the findings can provide significant cultural underpinnings which are increasingly needed in our troubled world.
