Abstract

Previous research has not clearly determined the role of identity achievement in the perception of the paranormal. The present line of research was designed to assess the development of identity as an important factor in evaluating self-concept and belief in the paranormal. A series of questionnaires was administered to 202 college students to assess their level of identity achievement, self-concept, and paranormal beliefs. Results indicated that seniors' identities were not more developed than those of first-year students, and there were no overall differences in self-concept Seniors, however, did report less overall belief in the paranormal and fewer traditional religious beliefs in comparison to first-year college students. Factor analysis revealed that traditional religious beliefs may not be an aspect of belief in the paranormal, as suggested by Tobacyk (1983). The conclusion of the research is that identity achievement is not a factor in determining belief in the paranormal. Implications for the further understanding of paranormal ideas are pre­sented, as are suggestions for future investigations.
