Alvarado, Carlos S(2001). Features of out-of-body experiences in relation to perceived closeness to death. Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease, 189(5), (pp. 331-332) Abstract Replicated research findings of G. Gabbard et al (1981) concerning features of out-of-body experiences (OBEs) in relation to perceived closeness to death. Specifically, the features of OBEs reported to occur in near-death and in non-near-death circumstances were compared. In the present study, "near death' was defined by accepting the Ss' estimation of their closeness to death. Ss were 88 persons (aged 20-80 yrs) who replied to printed calls for cases in several Scottish newspapers. Data were obtained through a questionnaire developed by the author. Of 81 questionnaires with information about the S's impression about whether he or she was near death during the OBE, 27% believed that they had been close to death. 73%, however, did not believe this. There were no significant differences between near-death and non-near-death Ss in regard to sex, age, or religiosity. Yet, the results confirm some of the findings of Gabbard et al. Specifically, those who believed that their OBE occurred near death were more likely to report seeing the physical body and seeing lights than those who did not believe they were near death at the time of the experience.
