Irwin, Harvey J(2000). Belief in the paranormal and a sense of control over life. European Journal of Parapsychology, 15, (pp. 68-78) Abstract Investigated whether paranormal beliefs arise from a need to perceive control over life events. 174 adults (aged 18-61 yrs) enrolled in an introductory psychology course completed questionnaires concerning paranormal beliefs, spheres of control, the desirability of controlling events in their lives, and efforts to exert control over the physical environment. Results show that belief in broadly spiritual tenets tends to be endorsed by people, often females, who try to exert strict control over their physical environment, but who publicly repudiate any desire for control over life events. Belief in psi may be found among people, especially females, with an acknowledged desire for control and a conviction that they have the means to control events in the sociopolitical arena.
