Abstract

(from the introduction) Gardner Murphy's view of psychology stretched from the remote past--before Plato--into the future. Psychology was not limited to laboratory experiments--psychological issues and insight could be found in Shakespeare, Rembrandt, Beethoven, and the questions of a three-year old. /// Gardner's study of psychology began as a preparation for work in psychical research but he became one of the most beloved and revered psychologists of the mid-twentieth century, as well as an inspiring leader in psychical research. . . . His work in each field contributed to the other and his reflections integrated both into his conception of the human place in the universe. /// It is appropriate, then, to include in this volume some of the papers Gardner Murphy wrote for people interested in psychical research along with some papers written for psychologists.
