Honorton, Charles(1985). Meta-analysis of psi ganzfeld research: A response to Hyman. Journal of Parapsychology, 49(1), (pp. 51-91) Abstract Responds to R. Hyman's (see record 1986-05166-001) critique of psi ganzfeld studies and reports an evaluation that eliminates multiple-analysis problems. Using a uniform test applied to a uniform index, a composite (Stouffer) Z score for 28 of the 42 studies considered by Hyman was found to be 6.6 (p < 10-super(-9)), and 43% of the studies were independently significant at the 5% level. Six of the 10 investigator groups reported significant outcomes, and cumulation by investigator yielded a composite Z of 6.16. A number of considerations are reported that mitigate against selective reporting bias as a viable explanation of these findings. Hyman's "procedural flaws" analysis is discussed, ambiguities in the flaw criteria are noted, and examples of inconsistent or inappropriate assignment of flaw ratings are given. (48 ref)
