Grosso, Michael(1983). The parapsychology of religion: Remarks on D. Scott Rogo's Miracles: A parascientific inquiry into wondrous phenomena. Journal of the American Society for Psychical Research, 77(4), (pp. 327-345) Abstract Argues that D. Scott Rogo's (1962) book Miracles directs the reader to a distinct branch of inquiry that may be called the parapsychology of religion. It is noted that public interest in psi, which occurs in religious contexts, is increasing. A major thesis of Miracles is that miracles can be explained by human psi capacities. Part 1 of Miracles discusses miraculous talents; Part 2 considers miraculous events; and Part 3 concerns miraculous interventions. The theology of parapsychology is described. The possible functions of a parapsychology of religion- -including examination and redefinition of concepts of terminologies of religious experience--are discussed. These functions can be accomplished precisely, pragmatically, neutrally, and nonreductionistically with the aid of parapsychology. It is asserted that the parapsychology of religion could reunite science and religion into a single discipline, initiating a new science of the human spirit. (17 ref)
