Giesler, Patric V(1984). Batcheldorian psychodynamics in the Umbanda ritual trance consultation: I. Parapsychology Review, 15(6), (pp. 5-9) Abstract The Umbanda cult is an ecstatic religion found in all sections of Brazil. It retains aspects of original African religions syncretized with elements of Roman Catholicism, Spiritism, and Amerindian mythology and belief. Members solve problems by consulting the spirits through a medium. Study, experience, and pilot trials suggest to the author that consultations function in accordance with K. Batcheldor's (1979, 1982) principles of psychokinetic-conducive psychodynamics, but that ESP rather than psychokinesis is elicited. (27 ref)
