Beloff, John(1984). Research strategies for dealing with unstable phenomena. Parapsychology Review, 15(1), (pp. 1-7) Abstract In this paper presented at the Parapsychology Foundation Conference held in October 1983 in San Antonio, Texas, the author discusses the problem of replicating the results of parapsychology experiments in relation to the need to demonstrate the reality of psi phenomena and to undercover their nature. The value of various techniques is outlined, including the use of video recordings, computer-controlled experiments, and retroactive psychokinetic methods. The research potential of permanent paranormal objects that could be extensively scrutinized is also considered. Research is discussed from areas such as position effects in ESP testing and psi missing-displacement effects. Possible practical applications of psi and the development of parapsychological theory are noted. However, problems are found with respect to the extreme uncertainty of psi effects and the absence of a consensus on a conceptual framework for parapsychology. (18 ref)
