Grosso, Michael(1983). Jung, parapsychology, and the near-death experience: Toward a transpersonal paradigm. Anabiosis, 3(1), (pp. 3-38) Abstract Examines the near-death experience (NDE) in terms of the Jungian theory of archetypes and the concept of individuation of the self. NDEs are considered evidence for the activation of a unique archetype associated with the rebirth experience, designated the archetype of death and enlightenment (ADE). Areas considered include the fluidity and autonomy of the archetype, the numinous and the will to live, the feeling of immortality, and metanoia and the NDE. The general function of the ADE is outlined, and evidence is reviewed for the psychic manifestations of ADE in mystical phenomena, dreams, mythology, initiation rites, psychodelic experiences, and UFO "revelations." Possible objections to the theory are considered along with cultural and religious implications. (51 ref)
