Blackmore, Susan J(1983). Divination with Tarot cards: An empirical study. Journal of the Society for Psychical Research, 52(794), (pp. 97-101) Abstract Conducted 3 experiments to test the validity of using Tarot cards to produce personality interpretations. In each experiment, 10 Ss received Tarot readings face-to-face with the experimenter (E) as well as readings in which an assistant laid out the cards and noted the order and orientation, in the absence of the E. The E later wrote up the results. Ss rated both types of readings. When Tarot readings were given face-to-face, Ss rated them highly, but when given blind (using card order only) they were unable to select their own reading from among 9 others. Instead, they tended to choose readings that were most general. (12 ref)
